Easy French Toast (£1.16)

A super Easy French Toast recipe that makes the perfect comfort (but affordable) breakfast idea. PLUS it takes only 3 steps to make! This Easy French Toast has it all. It’s delicious, comforting, affordable, and easy. If you’ve never made french toast using challah bread or brioche please RUN (yes, RUN haha) to your local supermarket or bakery and purchase a loaf of challah bread or brioche. You’ll thank me later : )

Welcome back to another episode of budget-friendly recipes where I, Laura-Ellen, share some of the most delicious, inexpensive and soul-hitting recipes. If you ever try out my recipes I’d love to see how they turned out. Make sure to share your mouth-watering creation on social media and tag me!

The key to making this Easy French Toast soft and fluffy is to use thick slices of challah bread or brioche. Alternatively, you can use a loaf of white bread (it works out cheaper to use plain white bread or wholewheat bread 😉 )

Ingredients You’ll Need

You’d be surprised that this recipe only requires 7 ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Bread | For this recipe I used challah bread. Brioche works just as well but both of these bread cost a little bit more than a loaf of white bread so feel free to use a white loaf to further reduce the cost.
  • Cream | You’ve probably grown up making french toast using milk or for some just egg. Which still tastes good but using cream takes french toast to a whole new level of fluffiness and flavour.
  • Egg | Egg is used in french toast to solidify the batter-soaked bread.
  • Cinnamon | Cinnamon makes this recipe sweeter.
  • Nutmeg | (optional) The flavours of nutmeg and cinnamon complement each other and bring out the sweetness of this french toast.
  • Sugar | (optional) Sugar is used to sweeten the recipe.
  • Vanilla Extract | (optional)
  • Toppings | Berries, bananas, honey, melted chocolate etc go deliciously well with this recipe

Note: I used the entire loaf because I wanted thick slices, so this recipe serves two. To make more slices of french toast, cut the loaf thinner

Alternatives

Want to make this dairy-free? Or gluten-free? Down below I have some simple alternatives.

  • Instead of cream/milk, you can swap this out for dairy-free cream or oat milk
  • Brioche bread. Fun fact some brioche loaves contain milk so be sure to check for no dairy or simply buy a white loaf
  • Instead of using bread with gluten, use a gluten-free loaf of bread. Gluten-free bread does alter the taste a bit so use a little more cinnamon and vanilla.

Ingredients

  • 1 Loaf Challah Bread (£2.10) brioche or a thick white loaf can be used
  • ½ cup Single Cream (£0.99/300ml)= (£0.33p)
  • 1 Egg (£0.27)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla essence
  • 1 tsp Brown sugar
  • 1.5 tsp Cinnamon powder
  • 1 tsp Nutmeg powder
  • pinch Salt optional
  • Toppings In this recipe I used icing powder, strawberries, blueberries and honey

Instructions

  • Begin by slicing the bread into thick even slices. Set aside.
  • In a bowl, whisk the cream, egg, vanilla extract, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt together. Soak both sides of the sliced bread for 1-2 minutes.
  • In a medium heated pan, chuck in a cube of butter or a drizzle of oil. Carefully take the soaked bread out of the bowl and into the heated pan. Fry for 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden and crispy. Repeat using the other slices.
  • Serve with your desired toppings and Enjoy : )

Notes

  • I used the entire loaf because I wanted thick slices, so this recipe serves two. To make more slices of french toast, cut the loaf thinner.
