Beef Meatballs With Creamy Sweet Potato Mash

If there’s one thing I know how to make, it’s meatballs or “frikkadela”. Year-round long, these Beef Meatballs with Creamy Sweet Potato Mash will always be the best comfort meal.

If you don’t know, I’m South African and grew up with meatballs/frikkadela. My aunts used to make frikkadela with the creamiest mashed potatoes and gravy. Back home we call them frikadels or better-said frikkadela. If you’ve never tried them before then this recipe is for you!

Ingredients Needed

For the meatballs/frikkadela:

  • 500g Steak Mince (£3.19)
  • 2 Bell Peppers (£1.25/3)=£0.83
  • 2 Onions (£0.42)
  • Handful of Coriander (£0.26)
  • 2 Eggs (£0.54)
  • 2 Slices White Bread (optional)
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Onion powder
  • 1 tsp Brown sugar
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 1-2 tbsp Chutney (optional)
  • Sunflower oil for frying

Total Cost £1.31/serving

For the Creamy Sweet Potato Mash:

  • 2-3 Large Sweet potatoes  (£0.99/1)=£1.98
  • 1 White potato (optional)
  • 3-4 tbsp Butter
  • 1/4 cup Milk ( I used oat milk but feel free to use any milk)
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Total Cost £0.49/serving

What else can I serve with these meatballs?

These meatballs are perfectly delicious to enjoy on it’s own but here are a few other great ideas to pair these meatballs with:

  • Stuff a subway roll with lettuce, onions, tomatoes, the meatballs, and sauce. Voila! The BEST Meaty subway.
  • Spicy rice makes a perfect combination.

For the Creamy Sweet Potato Mash

  • 2-3 Large Sweet potatoes (£0.99/1)=£1.98

  • 3-4 tbsp Butter
  • 1/4 cup Milk
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

Creamy Sweet Potato Mash

  • Begin by peeling and chopping the potatoes into even cubes.
  • Bring a pot of water to a boil and throw the potatoes in. Boil until soft.
  • Once soft drain the water from the pot. Mash the butter and milk into the potatoes.
  • Season with salt and pepper.

Beef Meatballs/Frikkadels

  • Remove the seed and stalk from bell peppers. Next, peel and halve the onions.
  • Throw the bell peppers,onions, corriander and oil into the food processor. Blend until the vegetables are finely chopped.
  • In a bowl, add the mince, blended vegetables, seasoning, egg and shredded bread. Combine well using your hands.
    At this stage add in the chutney if desired.
  • Use a tabespoon and scoop the mix out. Use the palm of your hands and fingers to form an egg-like shape.
  • Heat up the oil in a frying pan and begin frying the meatballs until cooked.
  • Serve with Creamy Sweet Potatoes and Gravy
  • Enjoy : )
