Chocolate Nutty Granola (£0.53p)

This healthy granola is perfect for a healthy breakfast or even a sweet treat. You wouldn’t believe me when I say this granola will make you feel like you’re eating a “healthy” version of coco pops. This sweet granola is made with oats, cocoa powder, nuts, dark chocolate chips and honey.

Welcome back to another episode of budget-friendly recipes where I, Laura-Ellen, share some of the most delicious, inexpensive and soul-hitting recipes. If you ever try out my recipes I’d love to see how they turned out. Make sure to share your mouth-watering creation on social media and tag me.

These are one of those recipes you start eating consistently as it’s super easy to grab during a busy morning and serves as a delicious snack.

I’ll have to admit I attempted to make this granola three times. Yes, three times. The first granola tasted too sweet and the next batch was too dry with no flavour. But when I nailed this version I couldn’t believe how chocolatey and nutty it was. Since then I make a batch every week that lasts me throughout the week. I enjoy eating this granola with greek yoghurt and blueberries but it’s just as good on its own.

Ingredients you’ll need

As previously mentioned this chocolate nutty granola requires minimal ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Rolled Oats. You can use finer oats but it may end up being a little too crumbly. Using gluten-free oats will make this recipe gluten-intolerant-friendly.
  • Cocoa Powder gives the granola a rich chocolatey taste
  • Nuts. You can use nuts of your choice but for this recipe hazelnuts, pecan, and almonds are included
  • Chocolate Chips. I use dark chocolate to make this recipe vegan but you can use milk or dark chocolate. To save a bit more money buy a whole slab of chocolate instead of chocolate chips
  • Honey adds some sweetness but it also is what binds the ingredients together. A great alternative is maple syrup.
  • Coconut Oil also helps blend in the mix but it also gives a slightly coconutty taste that compliments the chocolatey taste. A great alternative would be olive oil.
  • Vanilla extract (Optional)
  • Coffee (Optional) A small pinch of coffee strengthens the flavour of the chocolate
  • Cinnamon (Optional) This is a personal preference. If you LOVE cinnamon then you won’t regret adding a pinch.
  • Sea Salt (Optional)

Substitutions

I frequently get asked about what substitutions can be made. If you’re vegan or gluten-free these swaps are perfect!

Down below are some of my easy swaps.

NOTE: Some of these swaps may alter the taste

  • Honey can be swapped for maple syrup to make this granola vegan
  • Rolled Oats can be swapped for gluten-free oats.
  • Coconut Oil can be swapped out for vegetable oil, sunflower oil, or any other fat.
  • Nuts can be swapped out for any nuts you prefer.

What Else Can You Add To This Granola?

Granola can be made with whatever ingredients you would like. Here are some additional ingredients you can include to make this granola tasty and nutritious:

  • Dried fruit. Raisons, strawberries, dates etc go well with this recipe.
  • Seeds. Pumpkin seeds add to the crunchiness in this mix.
  • Nut butters. Sometimes I add peanut butter to make the granola replicate Reeses Pieces. You can try adding almond butter or peanut butter for more of a nuttier taste or for additional protein.
